ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONSNational Research Council - Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) supports innovative Canadian small and medium sized businesses to grow stronger, faster and bigger through Technology. The suite of funding programs includes contributions to Canadian firms interested in developing innovative ideas to bring to market. In addition NRC-IRAP provides advice and referrals to specialized expertise to help them increase their innovation capacity and turn innovative technology into commercial advantage.The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Program is a federal tax incentive program, administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), that encourages Canadian businesses of all sizes, and in all sectors to conduct research and development (R&D) in Canada. It is the largest single source of federal government support for industrial R&D. The SR&ED program gives claimants cash refunds and/or tax credits for their expenditures on eligible R&D work done in Canada. NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) is Canada's premier funding organization with an annual budget approaching $1Billion. Companies can mitigate their R&D risk by partnering with NSERC and an academic researcher. Through its portfolio of funding programs that support early stage discovery research through to pre-commercialization activities, NSERC helps Canadian companies achieve competitiveness through innovation.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERSMike Zaks is an Industrial Technology Advisor for the National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP), with a focus on the BC wireless sector.With more than 25 years experience in the Canadian and international telecommunications and wireless industry, he has managed a broad range of successful projects related to developing, delivering and marketing new products and services for companies. Zaks has a sound understanding of what is required to drive the most innovative and cost effective strategies for launching new products and services to help his wireless sector clients become successful competitors in today's dynamic markets. Helene Spacek is a Research and Technology Advisor with the Canada Revenue Agency's Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED) Department. Her focus is on the Computing Science and Information Technology sector. Spacek's background includes over 30 years experience in the Computing Science industry, as an information technology professional and project manager, with a focus on large, complex projects and innovative, leading-edge technologies. Pam Giberson is the Research and Innovation Development Officer at NSERC's regional office in Vancouver. She obtained her PhD in Toxicology from the University of Saskatchewan then continued her postdoctoral training in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Prior to joining NSERC in 2006 Pam worked for a decade in the biotechnology sector in a variety of roles, including corporate development at a drug discovery company spun out of UBC, as a founder of a bioreagent company, and consulting to the local biotech sector. |
